« on: July 07, 2013, 02:41:02 PM »
I had literally just been thinking to myself within the last week that I wished Square would re-release the PC version of final fantasy 7 through steam, and then when I logged in today that was the first thing that popped up.  only $12!  i'm downloading it, suckers!

Materia!  Gil!  Shinra!  so many memories  :fr:

I'm thinking about getting it...not because I love the game (It's honestly not that great of a Final Fantasy or JRPG) but more because my PS1 discs will go bad and stop working eventually along with my PS2. It would be a backup copy.

I just lost my PS to a flood.  It was over a foot off the ground in my ex-gf's basement, so I figured it would be safe.  but that fucker flooded way more than I thought possible.  My games all survived, though, so I may have to buy a PS2 sometime in the future to be able to play my twisted metal games.  I gave my FFVII disc away to a friend years ago, and he gave it away to someone else so I'll never get it back.  $12 for a 70-hour game is a great deal, even if I have already beaten it

Oh it definitely is a good deal.  I'm probably going to pick it up just to have it as back up.  I'd suggest following the instructions in the top pinned thread on the forum for the game on Steam on how to swap the music files as the default MIDI files for the PC version of the game which this is (It's not actually a ported copy of the PSX version) are shit

Those PS1 discs got damaged just sitting around in sleeves.  :(

Mine are scratched to hell, as expected, but outside of the opening cut scene stuttering a little bit, it seems to run well enough (Even the end cut scene.)

Is this the same PC port that got fairly bad reviews years back, or a new enhanced port?  As I recall, it's FF VIII that got the good port.

Hm, the last time I was in a retro mood, I wanted to beat Emerald and Ruby weapons, and breed the gold chocobo..  And lost interest when I spent almost an hour at the sites with bird prints all over them, barely getting one chocobo for every 20 random encounters..  I had the lure and everything, so no idea if I did something wrong, or if this is normal.

Just a word to the wise: it's the PC version, not the original PS1 version. And it requires a Square Enix account to be able to play.

I had that shitty PC Port from years back.  This is that version.  Part of the reason it was a shitty port was you couldn't change the button mappings and everything was mapped to the Numpad O.o.  The in game graphics and text are smoother but the sound track is shit.  However, as I said earlier their is a thread on Steam about how to change the audio files to get a better quality soundtrack.

I also had the FFVIII Port.  That was a damn good port and even included the Chocobo Mini-Game that was only playable using one of those specialty PS1 memory cards that never got released to NA.

As for the Chocobo encounters it's normal but not normal.  It honestly depends on what level your Chocobo Lure Materia was at.

The Squeenix account is only necessary upon first time boot though.  After that you just turn off the cloud save option and the game can be played completely offline with no issues.
