I can't wait for this to start. I have read Book 2 and enough of Book 3 that I should not be spoiled by the show for the most part. There is so much great stuff that happens in Book 2, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. This is the first time I have read a book before seeing it on screen so that is a different experience for me.

I'm actually looking forward to next year and year 4 for book 3 to be shown on screen. The events in those two seasons will overshadow 1 and 2. Two should be great because the book heavily focuses on my two favorites: Tyrion and Arya.

I thought Book 2 was heavy Tyrion. I am a third through book 3 and I am already looking forward to season 3. Season 4 should be a mix of book 4 and 5 since they happen at the same time, so I am told.

There is really only one character I truly hate and that is Joffery. He seems to be the only character with no redeeming qualities and no motivation for his cruelty. I don't like Cersei but I get her motivation. I find there is no faction that I am seeing as the good guys or bad guys. The whole book is written in shades of grey, which may be why it is so good. Jon Snow might be the only character that I feel is really a good guy, of the main characters. Tyrion is on the wrong side but seems to go about his business in an honourable way. Sure he will hit you with a low blow when the ref isn't looking, but you expect it from him so you are ok with it. I like bad guys with legit motivations for their actions. I just don't see anyone as the face and heel in the story overall.

At least that is what I have gotten so far.

Well Martin wants to break up book 3 into seasons 3 and 4 since its long and wants to combine books 4 and 5 into one season since they happen at the same time.

That doesn't make much sense on the latter point. Book 3 is about 1000 poages and book 4 is 978 pages, not sure what book 5 is but I think it is around 1000 pages. If book 3 gets split into 2 seasons then 4/5 should be 3-4 seasons. Then you have 2 more books that finish the series both are going to be 1000+ pages each. Which gets us to 10-12 seasons for the entire story. Which is great for me, but I doubt HBO would want a series that is that long. Doing 1 book per season is 7 seasons already, pushing it to 10 would be pushing it I think.

Part of book 4 takes place during book 3, and the rest during book 5. The latter half of book 5 continues past where book 4 left off. I think season 3 and 4 will deal with book 3 and part of 4, and possibly a bit of book 5. This would mean season 5 would be the remainder of book 5, and possibly a bit of book 6, depending on the release.

As far as things go though, you could sort of end the series after book 3 is complete. It's got a few pay-offs, unlike how Deadwood ended, grasping for its conclusion.

I'd imagine books 4 and 5 combined would be split over two seasons as well, although they can cut out a ton of it, unlike like book 3. A lot of that stuff Martin focused on wouldn't make good television and can be edited down to tell a better story.

Most of the battles had been glossed over in the first season. The characters talk about them but you didn't see mush happening. That is likely due to money concerns.

Having watched the trailers I do not see anything that would convince me that they have changed that stance for Season 2.

Do you think it is possible to gloss over the end of the second book? Or has HBO just held back that piece for the show?

I hope it is the latter.

Well the one big battle, The Battle of Black Water, is going to be the one written by Martin himself and directed by the guy that did The Descent. So the heavy hitters are on it, but the budget will most likely cut things no matter what.

This is the battle I am talking about. Glad they are loading up for it. When I read it I thought this could be better then the battle for Helm's Deep which is my favourite movie screen battle ever.

I am disappointed that WM is on the same night. Sure I have a PVR, but it just feels wrong to miss it 'live'.

I have to admit that the first time I watched the series, I just didn't get why people loved it so. Tyrion is awesome and the visuals are great, but I found myself not liking certain characters for their sheer stupidity. Obviously, Ned Stark being the biggest offender in that regard. The King was another imbecile. Ned's daughter who is being held hostage was written like a Justin Bieber fan.

I rewatched it recently as I am recovering from hernia surgery, and I enjoyed it a lot more. A lot of my complaints still hold up and Joffrey is just insufferable with no likeable traits as a character, but I am looking forward to Season 2. I like the other Stark clan, mainly Lady Stark who I think has done an excellent job so far.

I just hope they don't keep offing main characters. See, the trick Spartacus pulls is while it will kill off main characters on occasion, they introduce new characters a lot and then kill them after 4 episodes, making it seem like a major character death. Their core is still intact.

I don't want to have no Starks or Knights Watch by season 3 and have them replaced with new characters.

If you are watching this hoping main characters won't die, don't watch it. I am only halfway through Book 3 but I have been told to not get attached to characters as they are killed off as you move through the story.

Ned was a victim of his own honour. He believed that other people lived by the same code he did, that cost him his life.

Yes, making Ned an idiot.

I can deal with major character deaths, but if they aren't replaced meaningfully or if they all vanish, then the show will just float on without significant meaning other than "Well, that battle was fucking awesome".

Well the show is based on a time where sons replace fathers. So if you are expecting a big star to replace Ned, that just won't happen. The story is plot driven not star driven.

Tonight on HBO at 11:15 they have a special about Season 1 and a look at Season 2. It is after Life's Too Short...which is awesome.

I noticed that too. She makes herself look hideous as Dany compared to her real look. I was stunned how hot she was.

Episode 1

Okay I have read the books this time around, so I know what to expect. But this episode felt a little too light story wise, especially for the premiere. They set up GREAT things to happen next week, but it was a little too dull.

-More missed opportunities with the Hound and Sansa. With only 9 episodes left, when are they going to hear from this guy?!?

-Interesting stuff with Jon Snow, but I was dying for him to meet the Wildlings. Looks like that's next week though. Same with Robb Stark. Interesting set up with Theone, but again the fun stuff starts next week.

-Bran Stark also a slow storyline, other than finally introducing his wolf dreams. Did they show the Freys at all or did I miss them?

- Dany and her dragons, can't complain here because it's accurate to the book, her story moves in slow motion til a certain point.

- We finally meet Stannis, but if you didn't read the books, you might have missed who he was completely. Poor introduction, more about Melissandre, also a poor introduction.

-Zero Arya? Her journey is one of my favorite things. Hope she gets most of an episode dedicated to her.

Okay the good stuff

- Little Finger vs. Cersei. I don't remember this at all from the books and really enjoyed seeing this. It's a clever scene and planting of some seeds for later.

- Joffrey vs. Cersei. Also don't remember this from the books, so this is new. Curious to see where they are going with this.

- Tyrion arrives, great intro with Cersei.

-Robb's wolf, much better than last season.

Overall it was okay. Curious what non-book readers think. With only 9 episodes left, I hope they pick up the pace because lots of important things need to take place.
