Guardians of The Galaxy (2014)
« on: August 01, 2014, 07:01:53 PM »
I think I just liked this movie. Nothing more. I wanted to love it and I kept waiting, but it never happened. And it's not that I had high expectations, because I had them for Winter Soldier and it blew those away.

It's a good space story like JJ's Star Treks or the original Star Wars, but focusing on the Han Solo side of things, except I felt those are far superior when they shouldn't be. They have so many interesting comic book space characters and stories to borrow from.

Sometimes I felt this was Peter Quill's story. It's certainly his origin story and he gets the best introduction of them all, maybe the only introduction. Everyone else kind of just shows up. If it's a Peter Quill story, there isn't enough of that at times either. Rocket and Groot are the scene stealers, but I wish they had a bit of an origin story like Quill got. You got a little taste thanks to Cooper's incredible voice acting in a couple of really strong sentences explaining what he is. Gamora was nice, but there's a potentially amazing origin story they left out for her. She might be far more interesting than Quill having been raised by Thanos and next to the equally interesting Nebula. Plus there's no cool Black Widow type moments that she could have easily had considering how skilled she is at combat.  Same with Drax, although I think they did the best they could with his origin and played by Batista.

It's enjoyable, but everything is just given to you rather than built and I can only blame that on the director. You're just supposed to go along with everything and buy into the relationships before they're really developed on screen.

The movie is funny. You don't ever have to see any previous Marvel Studios films to pick up on things, although it helps to have some comic knowledge. Bradley Cooper's voice is unrecognizable. I don't know if Cooper is that good of a voice actor or they digitally changed him a but, it's great and never distracting thinking it's Bradley Cooper speaking through Rocket.

The villains are kind of weak and not because of the actors. At one point you do meet Thanos full on and you realize everyone else is just secondary to him on a grand scale. Lee Pace did the best possible job he could, but just mentioning Thanos overshadowed his character. Although I thought he was much better than the dark Elf in Thor 2. Michael Rooker as a semi on again off again villain was portrayed way too much like his character from Walking Dead. It's Merle with blue face paint.

I suppose Star Wars is the closest thing to compare this to, but mostly character archetypes. Quill and Rocket are both Han Solo, but different moods. Groot is Chewie. Gamora is Leia. Drax is kind of just Drax.

With the first one out of the way, I hope the sequel has them working together as a great team from the start. I still don't think Gunn is the right director for this, but lots of people are loving this, so I'm in the minority. As someone who reads Marvel's space stuff, there's an incredible and awesome universe they left out of this movie, but hinted with Thanos that I hope we eventually get to see.

Loved seeing Thanos, one of my favorite characters EVER. Wished the movie had the helmeted Nova Corpse. They sort of did, but didn't embrace it. Nova would be amazing to watch on screen, but will we ever see him?

Good movie. I personally liked Winter Soldier and Days of Future Past a lot more. It's better than Spider-Man 2, but that movie is a mixed bag of garbage and some awesomeness.

I'd love seeing Richard Rider in a movie, but have a feeling we'd end up with the new guy instead.

James Gunn said Nova wasn't or won't be in the films because he doesn't like the helmets.

On another note, the soundtrack for this film is awesome.

Very good movie.

Villains were strong and threatening, but Honestly, Ronan talks more than he should, and could have been more interesting had he talked a bit less (Have someone else fill in his back story).  Pacing of the movie was pretty good, but it hickups at times mostly due to marvel fan service (fine if you know the deep lore, but a little annoying if you don't or don't care).  Story was pretty generic rag tag group saves the universe, but it was well done.  File the numbers off and change the fluff a bit and you get a really good space sci-fi movie, or something fun in the Star Wars universe.

The origins were all sorta squished in there, but they mostly breeze by them other than Starlord's, and even his is brief.  Honestly, I felt that fit the movie better.  The only leap you need to make is for Gamora's willingness to betray Thanos so early, and Drax waxing on about his family gets a little old (though it does fit the character as they have portrayed him).

I liked Cap 2 better, but it's a different kind of movie (Cap 2 was more an action triller, this was an action comedy and not apologetic about it).  It was highly entertaining, and probably one of the better Marvel movies overall.

Serenity is a good comparison. As is Star Trek and Star Wars. Elements of all three.

Rocket and Groot are getting all the praise for the best parts of the film, but Chris Pratt does a fantastic job here.

Batista has some nice quiet moments individually with the crew.

The after credits scene is pretty ballsy. I think only hardcore geeks will get a kick out of it while casual movie goers will go "wtf is that?"

Well, I only know Howard from that old movie, so any geek call outs went over my head, but still thought it was an awesome cameo.

And yeah, right after the movie was over I found myself comparing it to Serenity, too..  Character driven, whimsical takes on the sci fi genre aren't exactly common place, so it's a pretty natural comparison..

I'm going to have to see it again, as the first time was basically me trying to shut my comic book brain up about the differences:
  • Nova Corps going from armored space corps to spiky shipped space corpses.
  • Cosmo not being a hardcore Russian cosmonaut with telepathy.
  • Kree becoming, quite literally, the Necromongers.
Bunch of little things that really didn't matter though, so I hope to see it again as this time I'll know the differences are there already.

Great character work, with some of the best stuff coming from not just having Rocket be a cute, fuzzy quip machine and actually putting some pathos in those paws.  Big Dave was fun as well, but I was taken out of it by my wrestling fandom, so again I'd like to see this again so I can base my feelings off of the experience, not the past of the experience.  Nice touch with Groot as the heart of the team, but the only one who seemed sort of 'meh' was Gamorra.  Granted, we got to see her doing badass stuff, but she never felt all that dangerous.

All props go to Pratt, though, as he plays Quill like the type of person who would be the 'glue' that holds a team like this together.  Bad enough to be dangerous, but just enough loyalty to inspire trust in his companions.  Pratt knocks this one out of the park as he not only needs to be our surrogate to this world, but also needs to play a pirate, a scoundrel and a leader.

Lots of violence in this one too.  Like, dead aliens everywhere but not the level of blood, gore or goo that you got with Slither.  I'd go for an uncut version where Ronan's hammer squishes heads like Gallagher on a coke binge, but at least what we got was pretty well-shot action that you could keep track of during hectic space battles and people-punching ass kicking.

Will see again.  Not sure if it's the Best Marvel Movie, but it's certainly 'A' Best Marvel Movie.

Yeah, Gamora being stuck in the shadows was one of my pet peeves.

Sure, big Dave spent most of the movie being used as a punching bag, but he also had much more of  presence..

The Kevin Bacon joke made me wonder if the X-Men films exist in the Avengers universe, since he was in First Class.

Saw that they recast Thanos. Good job, booting a lower level actor who could have used a career break like that and giving it to a struggling up and comer like they did. Guess Whedon is guarding the galaxy from new black actors.

Just thought this scene was awesome.

Joss may not have had anything to do with this movie, but he'd be perfect for the sequel, or better yet a television series at some point..

Yeah, that gets a bit too Stormtrooper-y for a group of good guys with no backstory or Richard Ryder to humanize the helmet.

Agreed, but you don't want to confuse bad guys and good guys at this point, as the heroes of the movie exist in the space between the two.

should be able to differentiate good guys from bad guys based on their actions and not the color of their tights.
