Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
« on: November 13, 2011, 09:38:55 PM »
It's like Oblivion, but with the biggest flaw taken out.  The enemies no longer level with you.  And there's dragons.  And everything looks a lot better.  Dragons.

Are there bigger dragons than the videos and commercials?

My biggest disappointment with almost all RPG's like Oblivion and Fallout, is no super huge bosses.  The big robot in Fallout would have made a good boss encounter, if he was bigger..  :(

There are bosses...sorta.

There are nine dragon priests that you have to kill/defeat.

They're bastards.  The first one I fought was an impossible task.  Couldn't beat it because I wasn't prepared with potions.

i just recently played Fallout New Vegas and really enjoyed it. i've never played Elder Scrolls, but is it safe to assume it's in that same style of gameplay?

if it is, would i have had to played the rest of the elder scrolls or can i just start with Skyrim?

Never played it, but a friend that has it said it's almost like World of Warcraft:  Single player.

Picture any fantasy oriented MMO focusing on single player, and you probably won't be too far off.

You don't need to play any others, as they're set hundreds of years apart and don't really have a lot to do with each other.  There's references to events in the previous games, but that's about it.

Skyrim does take place two hundred years after the end of Oblivion, but all the other games take place during a forty year span. Arena was 399 and Oblivion was 433.

You don't need to bother playing any of the others. Just grab a sword, learn a fire spell and go kill dragons.

So how do you play, anyways?

If/when I get it, I'm shooting for membership to the Dark Brotherhood, which I understand is harder to flag down than Oblivion, where you only have to kill an innocent or two..

so, is this an MMO or is it strictly single player?

i didn't think that game companies even made single player RPGs anymore

Like I said, I never played it.  But a lot of MMORPG's like WoW are pretty much based on western RPG design.  Look at any Youtube vid, and the gameplay is pretty similar to a MMORPG PVE experience..

I'm still making my way through Revelations so I haven't had a chance to play Skyrim yet. If you've ever played a fantasy RPG you know the basics already. The leveling up by stats is different and its a slightly more complicated with the birthsigns and racial traits but its nothing too bad.

This just arrived in the mail along with MW3.  I've been playing BF3, and I'm pretty nervous to start Skyrim and have it consume my life.

You don't need to play any others, as they're set hundreds of years apart and don't really have a lot to do with each other.  There's references to events in the previous games, but that's about it.

The first four all take place in the span of 40 years or so as someone pointed out.  All the events are intertwined and part of a prophecy written out on The Elder Scrolls.  The four events that happened are what lead up to and cause what is happening now 200 years later in the latest game.  It's a bit complicated to understand but it isn't necessary to play the others to play and enjoy this one.

The main story of an Elder Scrolls game isn't really even that important and makes up only about 10% of the game...if that.  If you care about story this is a wonderful Wiki available for viewing or you can read any of the HUNDREDS of in game books.

They've also made many improvements over the old games so I would suggest playing them first for at least just the story if you ever plan on playing them.  That way you aren't pissed and disappointed at how broken and badly built the leveling system was back then.  Now it's pretty much perfect.

All in all though if you do plan on playing, which I highly suggest you do, make sure you have a lot of free time dedicated to it and don't expect to do much else other than play this game.

These.

At my current rate of play and the upcoming holiday I won't get through Revelations until next week. I'm seriously debating if I want to play WWE '12 or Skyrim first. Skyrim will be a huge timesink.

You just as well play WWE '12 first. I've been playing Skyrim since 11/11 and I've only done 36 hours without getting that far in the main quest (I've taken breaks to play/finish other games when I would get tired of Skyrim).

Those books you can read in the game were made into downloadable ebooks by a fan.

Read them on your Kindle, or whatever.

Someone did that with Morrowind and Oblivion as well.  The guy who did it for Oblivion also printed them all, aged the paper, and then bound them in leather for his own personal copy

Just used my Whirlwind shout, impaled a Bandit, then beheaded his companion right after.
Love this game.

I love the Storm shout, but it kills everything.  Had a horse turn against me after being struck by lightning.  It also killed Lydia a few times, which sucked.

I have 4 shouts total, but can only use 2 so far (Unrelenting Force and Whirlwind), I wonder how many dragons I gotta kill to unlock the other 2 (Disarm and Soothe)?
I also fully furnished my Breezehome house in Whiterun! Huzzah!

When you go to the shouts menu, you should be able to press a button to unlock the others if you have souls you haven't used yet.  Took me a while to see that.

Just started this morning and played all day. Killed a dragon, two giants, three wooly mammoths and sucker punched an elk. I've crossed like a tenth of the map and discovered maybe half of the stuff there. I purposely got lost and found a house with two dead bandits outside it. It wasn't a part of any story I had, but just something that happened somewhere that I probably never would've found. There is so much to do and miles and miles to do it in. I love this game already.
