I don't think backwards compatibility is a big deal tbh.  I was all worked up about the PS3 needing it and then I rarely used it.

Total number of times I played original XBox games on my 360: 2.

I like the idea, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. If I really have the hankerin for an old game that I can't play, I can just hook up my old machine. It's more of a convenience thing than anything.

A lot of this stuff is where the market was heading anyway (integration with TV, voice activation, etc...)

Though I can't wait for the stories about arguments over what to watch where everybody yells at the X-Box to change channels.

Backwards compatibility isn't a deal breaker for me, either.

What might be, is the fact that consoles are essentially limited use computers now..  Their best games on consoles, are usually on the PC too, and with the added benefit of being moddable, as opposed to the old days when things like Black Isle games were PC exclusives, and console games were rarely ported  The social media crap is all stuff I can just build a PC and do on that, and get as good, or a better, gaming experience..

I won't get a Xbox One.

Nothing about it is even remotely interesting to me. I don't really want a device that allows me to watch TV, sports, Netflix, DVR (which requires a separate device anyway) or original programming lead by some old woman who used to work at CBS.

I want to be able to play multiplayer games online for free. I want what I purchased on XBLA on my 360 to be instantly usable and playable on the Xbox One. Full backwards compatibility isn't an issue, but NONE of the 360 retail games will work? I was OK with not being able to use Xbox games on the 360 because that wasn't really an expectation for me. What will happen to the 360 Xbox Live network and the XBLA games I (and others) purchased when Microsoft pulls the plug on support for XBL for 360 owners? Will I still be able to play those games and earn achievements or will it be 'sorry, we can't login you in at this time'? I predict mass videos on Youtube of people taking baseball bats to their 360's and their games once that happens.

Microsoft is the winner of this past console gen and they are already pissing away any goodwill they have. They seem dumbfounded by the fact people don't want 'permissions' to play their games -- they want ownership! They don't want to pay a fee for a second-hand game. Not to mention people living and working overseas or in places with spotty internet connections will now be unable to play their Xbox One games. I'm just amazed Microsoft would be stupid enough to not foresee any of this. Sure, E3 will have games but I don't foresee any that I would want.

To be fair, going for peak graphics with a console is a losing proposition, given how quickly technology is moving.

It's the games that matter, and all this Kinnect/social media focus kind of has me worried on the gaming front..

You don't need amazing hardware to bring out the best graphics. Have a look at the COD: Ghosts demo or the new game from the Alan Wake guys (I forget the name) - but they just changed their own graphic engines and the difference is astounding with not a lot of bump in hardware.

Lately Microsoft has been focusing on optimization. People scoffed at the early Windows phones - what? you only have 512 MB of RAM? - but the OS was blazing fast and the phones outperformed other devices, because the OS was tailored to get the most out of the hardware. The same thing is happening with Xbox.

And to DocSavage - I'm not seeing the social media focus you keep talking about. Twitter/Facebook/etc has barely been mentioned so far. The focus has been more on Skype (which I guess you could call a social network, in it's own way) but it's different - it's about experiencing the Xbox and it's content in new ways with friends (playing games together, watching TV, etc) - not about posting/sharing stuff over the web.

Unless our interpretation of social media is different - I hear that and I immediately think Twitter/Facebook/blogs etc. But the core focus appears to be live real time interaction.

Yes, I include things like Skype under the umbrella "social media", since the point is using them with your online friends.

One more thing to remember about this reveal event, is this is exactly what it was - a reveal event. This was the show to pimp the native abilities (those are the two key words) of the new console.

This is a staged release process. All the focus on games is coming at E3 in June and we'll find out what kind of a gaming console this thing really is.

Well, if judging by what was shown during the reveal, there is at least going to be a version of Crackdown. Rare's game is also going to be there (I'm guessing it'll be called Wizards & Warriors).

God, I know its not going to happen, but I wish they'd do a "sequel" to Killer Instinct.

Fulgore was my main.  :music_mini:

I was allright with Cinder and Jago too, but tbh Jago didn't really belong in the series.  He was just a Shoto clone.  They could have cut him instead of Riptor.

Killer Instinct 1 and Killer Instinct 2 work just fine on Mameplus, if you ever want to go a few rounds over Kaillera.   :biggrin_mini2:

So, what happens to all the dlc games you paid for, once the next gen gets rolling and Live services become suspended?

Once your console dies, you could normally transfer it to the same account on a replacement console with the same profile the content is linked to..  But that requires downloading the account.

It's a real issue, considering content like Live Arcade games won't be compatible with next gen systems..  I'm not sure I like the idea of throwing out the baby with the bathwater on everything last gen, if it means I can't enjoy content I paid good money for once all Live/PSN services are dropped..

Pretty sure you dont have to be signed in to Live to play your XBLA games. So just...hook up your 360 and play them.

Yeah, but if your Xbox breaks down and you replace it, you'll need to download your profile onto it to access the games, even if they're stores on a hard drive.

Supposedly,  Microsoft will continue to support XBLA games on the Xbox 360 and XBL for the 360.

How long that will last will remain to be seen. If they do to the 360 owners what was done to the original Xbox owners and cut the service after 18 months, people will be PISSED.

Dude, I loved doing that, pissed a many people off in the middle of their combos.

Not my thing since I'm on this crappy Vista laptop, but when I upgrade, I'd love to teach you a lesson or two. :P
