Wow, Hollywood must be getting desperate if they're planing to draw from this poisoned well. How could anybody want this after how god awful the last few seasons of the show were?

Any MMA fans still kickin around? I watched one of the greatest Flyweight fights of all time this weekend between Figueiredo and Moreno. It was reminiscent of Lawler/McDonald in that it was back and forth, and competitive throughout the whole fight. Not to mention the crazy pace they were able to maintain while throwing and landing bombs on each other. The card also featured Tony Ferguson getting dominated by Charles Oliveira, (who I've never heard of, but has apparently been around for years...) and a decent women's fight. The rest of the card was forgettable with a snoozefest Heavyweight fight and a really quick 1st round knockout loss for Jacare Souza, who is 41 years old now!

Now I feel old...

General Discussion / Re: Fasting
« on: May 28, 2020, 11:13:41 PM »
During the first 6 weeks or so of lockdown, I was essentially intermittent fasting. But it was mainly because I went from a bodybuilding diet, 4 days a week at the gym and 1 or 2 days snowboarding so I was burning a lot of calories. Then once the ski hill and the gym closed, my metabolism was in high gear but my caloric output dropped off a high cliff. So after a few days of isolating and not exercising, my appetite basically disappeared and I was eating one meal per day, or occasionally not even a proper meal.
But now that I'm back to work full time, and I've returned to a more stable sleeping schedule, it's really hard to skip any meals because of the physical nature of my job.

Most working actors in show business would love to have Rocky's problem. He's doing just fine as an action star, and his kid-friendly roles are almost certainly part of the plan, not things he get's stuck doing because there's nothing better for him.
I admit, I don't watch a lot of movies. And I hope this doesn't come off as sarcastic, but can you point out some of his action movies that are actually good, and feature decent fight choreography?

Arnold could get away with his size in the 80s, because back then most action movies and scenes within those movies revolved around guns. I've seen pretty much every Arnold movie, and I don't think he has one single hand-to-hand fight scene which isn't laughably bad by modern standards.

It's a shame, because the Rock has amazing physical acting skills. His fake punches while wrestling were some of the best looking among the main event scene at the time. He can sell, he can bump, and he is (was) surprisingly agile for a 6'4 monster.
Perhaps part of the problem with casting Rocky in a highly physical, action oriented movie is simply finding suitable stunt doubles. That was also a big problem for Arnold in his early career...
EDIT: I forgot that Dwayne has been in some of the recent Fast & Furious movies, but I haven't seen any of them except the original. So maybe he's got some good scenes in those movies, and I just haven't seen them

Undertaker's action movie/fight scene dialogue was pretty good, I thought. A little surprising that his biker incarnation never seemed to earn him any movie roles, especially as a heavy. Calaway is 55 years old, but Liam Neeson was reinvented as an action hero when he was 56.
He's too tall for Hollywood. Same problem with the Rock, he's just too big. It's hard to do believable, hard-hitting action choreography that is up to modern standards when using such large, strong actors. That's probably one of the main reasons that Dwayne has been so criminally underused in Hollywood. He should have had roles in every major action franchise of the past 10 years, but he's been stuck doing kid friendly garbage. And why? Well, my theory is that there just aren't enough stunt men large enough to have believable and engaging fight scenes.

I don't like how the expression "spill the tea" is gaining traction.
I listen to talk radio during my morning commute, and I'm getting sick of hearing women say the phrase "lean into ____" when they're being interviewed. Partly because I don't know what it is they are trying to say, but mostly because it seems like one of those buzz words that people toss around which doesn't really mean anything and gets used in a different context each time.

« on: September 24, 2018, 01:48:53 AM »
I haven't watched yet, but the consensus has been that the second season is a lot better.
I found the plot just as boring, and the kung fu scenes slightly better. The actor playing Danny Rand has 0 charisma, and the story was fairly cliched and predictable. Plus it doesn't further the Defenders Universe in any meaningful way beyond a potential Misty Knight/Colleen Wing buddy PI show. May as well just do Heroes for Hire and fold everyone into it instead of doing separate lame shows like Iron Fist and Jessica Jones.

General Discussion / Disney Buys Fox
« on: December 19, 2017, 12:10:48 PM »
On one hand, I'm excited to see mutants in the MCU, and perhaps this will mean that Disney will rescind their order on Marvel to bury the X-Men characters.

On the other hand, it sucks to see Disney gobble up another media corporation and increase their already absurd amount of power and influence in the entertainment industry. Fox has some legendary properties and I worry about how Disney will handle them.

Can we expect to see Deadpool 2 get neutered before release? Can we expect to see any more R-rated superhero movies using X-Men characters?

At the very least, I'm hoping this will lead to some decent Marvel video games where the X-Men are included and promoted instead of the crappy Avengers. But I still don't like the fact that Disney is well on its way to becoming a monopoly.

General Discussion / Re: The Defenders 2017
« on: August 27, 2017, 04:37:23 PM »
Overall I thought this season was well done, especially in the action scenes. But I do have some nitpicky complaints.

With the Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist shows, I sort of felt like the seasons were a bit too long with not quite enough action. Then the Defenders gave me what I thought I wanted; fewer episodes with a ton of fight scenes. But somehow, it was almost too much. Like RealMarchHare said, this season felt a bit short. I think the action could have had more impact if there had been some more story interspersed, and a couple more episodes of plot. Some more backstory on the five fingers of the Hand would have been nice, or some more scenes to at least make the organization seem like a more serious threat. In fact there were so many fight scenes packed into the last few episodes that I kind of started tuning them out, because they all started to look the same. Not sure if I'm just difficult to please, or if there is a happy medium in there that has yet to be found.

Jessica Jones is still the weakest link in the Netflix Universe. Her acting is fine, but she is just god awful in the fight scenes. They also didn't do a very good job of reminding people what her powers are...for anyone that didn't watch the JJ miniseries, they were probably wondering what she was doing mixing it up with the other enhanced folks. Likewise with Daredevil...they didn't do a great job of highlighting his enhanced senses, they just kind of made it seem like he has super hearing. For people that have followed the DD seasons, this isn't a problem. But they could have tossed in a couple of scenes of his "world on fire" perception of reality (or however he described it).

I kept waiting for a scene where Sigourney Weaver showcases some kind of fighting skill or special power, to justify her being the leader of the Hand. But it never came. She had no backstory, no real character development. Sig managed to give her a good screen presence, but that was simply acting skill. The character did not display anything all that evil or impressive or memorable. She was just kind of there and we had to accept that she was the leader of this supposedly ancient and all-powerful criminal organization.

I did like the Elektra turn, that was the only thing that I didn't see coming. But after that, the rest of the show was rather dull and predictable.

I hope they do another Defenders season, and I also hope that they are done with the Hand for a while. Seems like only Madam Gao, and maybe the Japanese guy are left anyway.

I enjoyed the Defenders, but I feel like it could have been better.

The goddamned excuse, "I just got out of a relationship, I'm trying to find myself".

I've gotten that at least three times in the last few weeks. And one of them said yes to a date then gave that stupid ass excuse. I don't buy it one it, i think it's the biggest bunch of crap i ever heard

Hey man, that's what I'm going through right now. I started hanging out with a girl I've known for a few years (as friends) right around the time my relationship started falling apart. It wasn't even a messy breakup, it was just hard because I fell in love with this girl and I knew that she was into me, but her excuse for breaking up was that she wants to go traveling in the fall and she didn't want a boyfriend because she thought I would interfere with her plans. So whatever, we're still on good terms and we still hang out.

But I'm also still in love with her, which makes dating the new girl a challenge. I even told her that despite the fact that I like her, I'm attracted to her and I'm open to dating her, that right now just isn't the best time to get serious.

It is possible to be into somebody but still keep them at a distance. Either to protect oneself, or in my case, to protect the new girl because I know that if we get close I will likely end up hurting her.

To top it all off, the ex and I are going on a 5-day hiking/camping trip next week through the mountains. Just the two of us, sharing a tiny tent alone on the trail with no cell service or other people to talk to. We had planned the trip months ago when we were still together, and neither of us wanted to back out. It should be interesting. It could either be the most amazing camping trip ever, or it could be the most awkward and awful 5 days of my life.

General Discussion / Re: Vinegar as a cleaner
« on: July 13, 2017, 07:20:13 PM »
vinegar is a great cleaner, especially for toilets because the acidity neutralizes the basic salts from urine. it's also good for shower walls and kitchen sinks for removing soap scum, as again, soap is basic. I also use vinegar on glass surfaces like my table and mirrors, as well as my car's windows.

throw some lemon juice into it to cut down the smell if you don't like the vinegar stink

People in restaurants who clap when a server drops a plate or glass on the floor. Would they find it amusing if a bunch of random assholes applauded them every time they fuck up at work?

« on: March 20, 2017, 12:54:49 PM »
I am 6 episodes in, and it's good enough to keep my interest but just barely. I like it better than Jessica Jones so far, but I'd put it below DD and Luke Cage in terms of overall quality. A lot of the fight scenes are slow and awkward, and look more like dancing than fighting. There is a scene where Danny picks up a pair of nunchaku to show off his "skill" to Colleen, and it is so fucking cringey. Looks like he practiced for about 10 minutes before they shot it and then moved on to the next shitty fight scene.

I hope there is a payoff of some sort later in the season, because if it keeps going at this pace I think I will end up regretting the time I spent watching like I did with Jessica Jones.

This is one character where it actually makes a lot of sense to do a race switch from the original. Casting an Asian guy to play Iron Fist seems far less offensive to the source material than say a black Heimdall or a black Johnny Storm. I am FAR from a whiny liberal and I certainly don't believe in shoving diversity down people's throats, but I've always thought it was a little silly to have a white guy as Marvel's greatest martial artist.

Mind you, I have never and will never read an Iron Fist comic book, so I have no attachment to the character whatsoever. I can see how fans of his may wet their beds over changing his race; hell, I was pissed when X-Men came out and they cast a 6'2 Aussie to play Wolverine.

Many of the reviews I've read have said that the fight scenes are bad and the guy they cast is shitty at play fighting. They should have cast Daniel Wu, that guy can tear up a choreographed fight scene (I just started watching Into the Badlands, he is amazing!)

This movie was great and it exceeded my expectations just like Deadpool did. So many mark-out moments, and the R-rating really allowed them to take the action scenes to a whole new level in the Superhero genre. I am very impressed with what Fox has given us, and hope to see them continue this trend of R-rated superhero films. Deadpool will make a good trilogy, and perhaps Cable can even have a spin-off if he's done well, or some kind of X-force film with X-23 and Domino on the roster.
